What people are saying…

Alex taught me so much about food photography — from classic composition, to using props, to actually giving me the confidence to shoot in manual mode. The way she explains everything is really straightforward and makes way more sense to me than a lot of the info and tutorials I’ve encountered before. Plus, getting her feedback while I was actually shooting was incredibly helpful. Alex not only has a great eye, but she’s a natural teacher!

Alex ran a group photography workshop that was both valuable and fun for our team. She has an approachable style to food photography, and we took away concrete tips and lessons to help us make our content even better. She is extremely knowledgeable in the space, and the hands-on portion of the class allowed us to work alongside her to really grasp the concepts she taught us during the presentation.

Food Styling and Photography Workshop

Upper East Side | New York City

Sunday, September 22, 2029 | 10am - 3pm

*This class has passed. Please contact me to be placed on the email list for the next workshop.*

Hi! I’m Alex Shytsman - food blogger, recipe developer, writer, and photographer. As a self-taught food photographer with over three years of teaching experience, I’ve taught over 200 students how to level up their photography, and I’d love to help you, too.

Being self-taught, I remember all the challenges and frustrations that come with learning food photography on your own. “Why does this light look weird?”, “Why isn’t the camera focusing where I want it to?”, and “Why, despite being delicious, does this recipe look so unappetizing on camera?” are just a few questions that have probably crossed your mind… they certainly used to cross mine!

In this 5-hour hands-on workshop, I’ll share with you the technical skills needed to take your food images to the next level. We’ll cover:

  • The basics of lighting

  • DSLR camera essentials (f-stop, shutter speed, ISO, etc.)

  • Smartphone photography tips

  • Recommended food photography equipment

  • Photo composition principles

  • An overview of current food styling trends

  • Tips for styling food on set

  • Tips for selecting props

  • Common beginner mistakes to avoid

The class will be held at a newly-renovated apartment studio on the Upper East Side in NYC (three blocks from the 86th Street station on the 4/5/6 line). Designed specifically for food bloggers and Instagram enthusiasts, the workshop will be divided into two sections: first, we’ll discuss technical concepts with a digital presentation and group discussion; then we’ll put everything we’ve learned to use with a hands-on photoshoot!

Whether you shoot with a smartphone or DSLR camera, for your Instagram account or your cookbook, this class will give you the tools and inspiration to create drool-worthy images.

This class is limited to 10 people so that each student may receive individual attention.

Coffee, water, and healthy snacks will be provided throughout the day.

If for some reason you cannot attend, you may receive a full refund for up to 20 calendar days leading up to the class. Afterwards, no refunds will be issued, but you are welcome to find someone else to attend in your place.
